HELP…….My Nails!!!

Throughout my career I have seen and heard from many clients who have experienced different problems with nails. The most common question I get asked is, “why is this happening to my nails”? Everyday can pose problems, however, summer seems to be where the problems are seen the most. Especially for those who are active and/or in water during the hot summer days. What better way to answer some questions than to write about it here.

 

Swelling and shrinking of nails: Nails can swell when they come into contact with water and then shrink as they dry. Constant exposure to water, especially when combined with harsh soaps or detergents, can lead to dryness, and make the nails soft and prone to polish peeling whether it is regular or gel polish. Chemicals will also break down the product that is used during you manicure.

Age-related changes: As you age, your nails may dry out and grow more slowly. Toenails often become thicker and harder, while fingernails may become thinner and more prone to breakage. This change in nail texture is not specific to a particular age and may not affect everyone but is usually seen in older adults.

Anemia and brittle nails: Anemia, characterized by a low red blood cell count, can result from various factors such as blood loss or insufficient iron intake or absorption. Brittle nails or a spoon-shaped appearance (koilonychia) can be associated with anemia.

I have experienced this firsthand. I had never had problems and when I became an anemic, my nails broke constantly. My toenails were jagged and kept breaking. In such cases, addressing the underlying cause and ensuring proper nutrition can help improve nail health.

Protecting nails: To prevent excessive moisture exposure and damage from harsh chemicals, it's advisable to wear gloves when washing dishes or cleaning the house. Opt for rubber gloves lined with cotton to reduce sweating, as prolonged moisture can weaken the nails. This simple measure can help protect and maintain nail health.

 

Most nail technicians will take responsibility when the problem is their work and fix/correct the problem. We know when the problem is not our work and when it is either the client nail maintenance, and/or lifestyle or the product isn’t working for you. If the product is the problem, nails may not be a good fit for you.

You should be using cuticle oil daily and having your appointments every 2 weeks at least. While summer is fun with activities, it’s imperative that you are doing everything on your part to ensure you are helping your nails last and not hindering them from doing well. In closing, when you’re having issues with your nails, ask yourself a few questions:

 

·      Am I in water (dishes, swimming, etc) If so, how much time am I spending doing these?

·      Have I been cleaning with chemicals?

·      Am I using my nails for anything that I’m not supposed to be using them for?

·      Am I seeing my nail technician every 2 weeks?
